The Red Rocks of Sedona

Slideshow of All Today's Images

Sedona is just full of spectacular scenery and the rocks, for which it is famous, are really and truly red. We arrived at the Rancho Sedona RV Park about 3:30pm after leaving Palm Springs at 8:00am this morning. The drive to Phoenix was pretty much just desert and distant mountains, plus, we've done it a few times now so there wasn't much new to see. However, about 30 minutes after turning north leaving Phoenix, we began to enter the Red Rock Country of Sedona and the scenery changed dramatically.

A lot of the mountains and rock formations have names and sometimes it's pretty easy to guess which red rock formation is which. For instance, this is Bell Rock:

The Rancho Sedona RV Park where we are staying is right in the middle of Sedona so it's handy to all of the shopping areas - of which there are several. After dinner tonight, we went for a drive and Paulette spotted both a Quilting Store and a Bead Store so she's all ready to hit those in the next 3 days. There is a very nice 'Main St.' with dozens of shops, restaurants and novelty stores and it sure was busy - it looks like this is quite a tourist oriented place.

Along the way, Paulette found time to ham it up a bit for the camera with a 'tumblin' tumbleweed'.

We are here in Sedona until Sunday and it looks like it is going to take every bit of that time just to see the main attractions in the area. There is a canyon drive up to Flagstaff, another 'red rock' tour to the small town of Jerome, and the town of Prescott as well as the Oak Creek Valley, Montezumas Castle and many, many other places and scenic sites here. It's going to be a busy three days for sure.

One of the sites we want to go back to is Oak Creek Canyon Park - we stopped there for just a few minutes on our drive tonight - it is really beautiful around there.

It's a bit cooler here in Sedona than it was in Palm Springs as the top temperature here today was 22C instead of the 30C we had become used to. Oh well!!

We haven't decided yet what we are going to do tomorrow. Paulette and I are going to look at a bunch of tourist pamphlets we got when we checked in and we'll make a plan from there.
