We had to go for some groceries this morning and ended up taking a drive down to the Salton Sea - about 45 minutes south of Desert Hot Springs.
On the way, we stopped at a place called Thousand Palms Oasis. This park is loaded with huge palm trees grouped very close together so that it looks like a 'palm forest'. Another neat feature of Thousand Palms Oasis is that the south plate of the San Andreus Fault runs right under the park. In the desert just outside the oasis area, the effects of some of the earthquakes and tremors are very visible - lot's of cliffs, crumbling ravines and crevices.

From there we drove down to have a look at the Salton Sea. As the name suggests it is a land-locked 'salt lake'. There are two roads that go by the Salton Sea - one on the west side and the other on the east side. I think we took the wrong road for sightweeing as we could see the lake but were never able to get to a beach or anywhere close to the water. After driving around for about 20 minutes or so, we just decided to head back to Desert Hot Springs.

Back at our campsite, we decided to go for a swim before dinner as it was still 31C! By the time we got back from the pool, a breeze had started up so it was cooling down quite nicely.
