After spending four great days in Sedona, AZ, we left the Rancho Sedona RV Park about 10:00am this morning for the short 90 minute drive to the Circle Pine KOA just outside of Williams, AZ. It was sunny again today but still pretty cool with the high today expected to be around 14C.
The City of Williams lies on the route of Historic Route 66, Interstate 40, and the Southwest Chief Amtrak train route. It is also the southern terminus of the Grand Canyon Railway, which takes visitors to Grand Canyon Village. Because of its location near the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park, Williams is a major tourist stop and has many motor inns, hotels, restaurants and tourism shops. It also has a quilting shop and Paulette found it right away!
Williams, Arizona will go down in history as being the last town to have its section of the famous and historic Route 66 bypassed. In 1984, Interstate 40 was opened around the town and newspapers the next day reported the essential end of the famous US Route 66. The following year, Route 66 was decommissioned. It's stil a big part of Williams though as there are a lot of businesses incorporating Route 66 into their names and it seems evey store sells souvenirs.

Williams is pretty much a one street town. There are, however, quite a few interesting little shops and we'll probably make another visit before we head off to Las Vegas.

We're staying at the KOA Circle Pines Campground about 5 minutes from Williams. It's a nice place, it has an indoor pool and 2 hottubs but no cable TV - OMG! Too many trees around to hook up the satellite dish - but, at least we do have wifi. Our furnace is going to get a bit of a workout here as the temps drop down below freezing at night. It's definitely a shock after the sunny, hot weather we've grown accustomed to for the last 3 months.Tomorrow's the big day - the Grand Canyon. It's supposed to be a nice sunny day but we've been warned to dress warmly as it can get quite cold up on the South Rim.
