Cowichan Bay, where Paulette and I have our home, is not a city, a town or even a village. At best, I guess it could be called a “community” as it doesn’t even have a town hall. We are officially classified as an unorganized territory – which sounds just fine to me! The hub of this rural community of farms and residences is a few hundred yard stretch of Cowichan Bay Road which runs parallel to the ocean and the Marina area that is the heart of Cowichan Bay. Here is where you will find a unique collection of restaurants, galleries, bakeries, a maritime museum, ice cream parlour, cafes and many other interesting shops.
Walking down the street from the Masthead Restaurant, you will pass by Hilary’s Cheese Shop, The Udder Guys Ice Cream Parlour, Grainery Bread & Bakery, …… and near one end, the Rock Cod Restaurant – a long time favorite of us locals as well as anyone else who stops to eat there. There are Whale Watching Tours and charter fishing businesses as well.
The actual Marina hosts a variety of sailboats, cruisers, ships and houseboats as well as many commercial fishing boats. Depending on the season, the collection of ships and boats can vary quite a bit and is always an interesting sight to see when sitting on an outside deck enjoying a cup of coffee or having lunch or dinner.
It is a very busy place too. I’m always amazed whenever I drive through the Bay area at how many vehicles are parked along side the road and in any other parking place available. It doesn’t seem to matter what time of day it is or what time of year either – it’s always humming with people enjoying the sights and browsing through the many shops.
