Walking just a couple of hundred yards down the hill from our house finds us right in the middle of farm country. The Cowichan Valley is home to hundreds of small farms of every type and description – dairy, vegetables, hay, orchards, llamas, sheep etc. plus about a dozen very good wineries.
At the bottom of our street, one of the local farmers sells his farm fresh eggs from a self-serve stall. It’s just help yourself and operates on the honor system, there is a slot to put your money in. He usually has plants and flowers for sale too. It seems to work out for him as he’s been doing business this way for the 20 years I’ve lived around here.
Turning left at the bottom of Judge Dr., we head down St. Catherine and look out over the fields towards the dairy farm off in the distance. This is a favorite walking route for many neighborhood dogs so Molly always wants to stop every few yards to check out the smells and dig around in the grass.
Further down the street, we usually end up at a road that dead-ends in front of a large field that, last year, was planted with acres of corn. The field is plowed right now but I don’t know what is planted in it for this year.
Finally, we’re back at the bottom of Judge Dr. ready for the hike up Douglas Hill and back to our house up at the top – until tomorrow and another walk into the country.
Molly never tires of this route – as a matter of fact, neither do I.
