The Cobble Hill Fall Fair is celebrating their 100th anniversary this year, that's quite an accomplishment! The first day of the fair was Saturday and it concludes today - Sunday. It was absolutely perfect weather for day one - clear skies and temps in the high 70's. I promised to take Mikayla today, so after lunch we headed over to have a look.

This event is a real old fashioned "fall fair" for the whole family. You won't find any carnival rides here - there's not a rocket-ship, tilt-a-whirl or roller-coaster to be found. Nor are there any of the side-shows and electronic games blasting out heavy metal ear-busting music.

Instead, the only rides at this fair were a manually driven merry-go-round for kids, miniature horse rides and kids hopping up and down into antique farm trucks and equipment.

That didn't seem to bother the kids at all - the fair grounds were just full of children of all ages who looked to be having a great time. They were looking at, and in some cases able to pat, the llamas, pigs, rabbits, chickens, cattle, sheep, horses and other animals that are a great part of this exhibition. For some of the older kids, there was a 'hay-bale' tossing contest that was drawing a lot of attention - even a bunch of giggling teen-age girls were giving it a go.

As usual, lots of old machinery and equipment was on display this year. There were antique trucks, tractors, logging equipment and an old threshing machine that was performing live demonstrations. The kids especially seemed to like playing with a bunch of old water pumps. There was always a bunch of them pumping furiously, on the 4 pumps set up, just to see the water gush out of the faucet - something they'd probably never seen before.

Walking around the fairgrounds yesterday afternoon, there was always some kind of activity to see. There were interesting displays and demonstrations by various artists and crafty types including basket weaving, spinning and weaving, and stained glass. The hottest job of the day had to be the poor blacksmiths who were toiling away over their hot stoves heating and hammering red hot iron. Other vendors were busy making cooper craft buckets.

Inside the main hall was where all the food, flower and craft competitions were on display - and, what a sight that was. Extra long tables loaded with flowers, produce, home-baking, honey, bread, cakes, jams, vegetables, needlework, pottery, arts and crafts, photography, big sunflowers, tall corn and much more. Although a lot of the items displayed 1st, 2nd and 3rd place ribbons, everything I saw looked like winners to me.

This is a very affordable, fun-filled event for families of all ages and judging from the crowds, hundreds of people were taking advantage of the great weather to attend. The cost to get in is $6 for adults, $4 for seniors, $4 for teens and children under 12 are admitted free - you can't beat that.

The annual 4-H cattle auction is scheduled for today at 4:oo. Somehow, I don't think I'll be there bidding on any of those monster cows and steers - maybe next year!
After a couple of hours at the Fair, Mikayla and I decided it was just too hot to stay any longer and we headed for home to spend a quiet Saturday night watching movies.
