Don Cherry is the outspoken, and flamboyant, hockey commentator and co-host of “Coaches Corner”, which is broadcast from coast-to-coast every Saturday night during CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada game. Cherry is an ex-player and NHL coach but is best known for his more than 25 year run on Coach’s Corner, especially because of his direct speaking style and his often controversial opinions.
One thing that is never controversial with respect to Don Cherry though is his staunch patriotism, and especially, his affection and support for those who serve in it’s military. Each time a Canadian soldier falls in combat during the Afghanistan war, Cherry pays tribute to the soldier, and his family, on his hockey telecast. Once a year, just prior to Remembrance Day on November 11th, he turns over most of his Coaches Corner time for a very special roll call of all those who have fallen during the previous year.
Here is Don Cherry’s Tribute to Fallen Soldiers as shown on the November 7th edition of Hockey Night in Canada. This roll call honours those who have fallen in action during the past year. The pipe band in the background is playing the Maple Leaf Forever – which is Canada’s unofficial second national anthem.
I would also like to pay tribute to my Dad who served with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles in WWII, was a veteran of the D-Day invasion on Juno Beach, and also a POW for a year in Germany. My Father, who passed away January 4, 2003, is buried in the Veteran’s Cemetery in Victoria, B.C., along with my Mother, my Grandfather and Grandmother, and 2 of my Dad’s younger brothers who were also war veterans.
Please honor a veteran, in your own community today, and thanks for visiting!
