I’ve been sitting around in front of the computer so much, that I hadn’t really noticed my hair was growing down over my ears! I was definitely overdue for a haircut. Getting a haircut, while quick and painless, is something I always seem to put off for as long as I possibly can. I did manage to get motivated and phone Sweeney Todd’s in Victoria Wednesday to make an appointment for Thursday morning at 11am.
My first stop, before getting a haircut, was John’s Place for a great breakfast! When I went to bed Wednesday night, for some reason I found myself thinking about “bacon and eggs, with hash browns, toast and coffee”! It must have been because I would be heading down to Victoria in the morning for a haircut and I knew that my favorite diner, John’s Place, was near by. In fact, John’s was just across the street from where I worked for 30 years – so, I know it well!
A small sample of the breakfast menu at John’s – One of Victoria’s best diners for 25 years nowSure enough, when I woke up Thursday morning, I was still thinking abut about “bacon and eggs”. I took this as a good omen and I thought I’d better pay attention lest some bad luck come my way. So, after my normal morning routine of computer time, with a few cups of coffee, then walking the dogs, I was still able to head down to Victoria an hour ahead of schedule with lot’s of time to stop at John’s Place for breakfast.
My breakfast special – bacon, eggs, home fries, toast and coffeeJohn’s Place has been a favorite spot for breakfast, lunch and dinner, in Victoria, ever since John Cantin, the owner, first opened for business in October 1984. John, an accomplished and award winning chef, had always wanted to open an old fashioned diner – as he says “like the ones we all knew, way back then”! He got together with another local, a transplant from Brooklyn, NY of all places, and John’s was soon on it’s way to becoming one of the busiest, and best restaurants in the entire city. It still is today.
Not only is the food great at John’s but the ambience is as well. Every wall is covered with posters, large and small, of celebrities from the world of sports and Hollywood – many who have visited the restaurant. There are large posters of rock concerts and baseball parks with tons of other interesting pictures including many of John, his family and his staff too. They even have a big old jukebox that pumps out songs from early in the morning to late at night.
I arrived at John’s just before 10am to find it as busy as ever, but I didn’t have to wait for a table which was great. After looking longingly at the famous Belgian Waffles on the menu, with their extravagant toppings, I decided I’d just better stick to my original plan and go with the “bacon ‘n eggs” special – I did, and it was perfect. The last time I had this kind of breakfast was way back in July when we were on holidays in our 5’er. Since then, it’s been a steady diet of high fiber cereal in the morning.
I was thinking on the drive home, that I just might start going for haircuts more often!
Have a great Friday and thanks for visiting!
