November Rains Make For A Busy Inside Day

The Island’s November rains seem to have finally arrived as it just poured all day yesterday.  It was actually nice to see as we are still way behind our average rainfall this year so I’m hoping a few more weeks of this typical November weather will fill up the streams and reservoirs.  It’s nice and warm though as the temperature hovered around 50F for most of the day.

There’s nothing like a fireplace to cozy up a room on a wet, rainy day IMG_3246

Since it was going to be an inside day, Paulette and I decided early yesterday morning that we may as well tackle a few jobs that we’ve been putting off for far too long.  Namely, painting the baseboards in the front hall foyer and the upstairs hallway; taking the glass off of the fireplace gas insert and cleaning it;, and finally, cleaning out the paint closet in our garage.

Removing the glass from the fireplace was pretty simple, just 2 screwsIMG_3236

Paulette wanted to do the painting which was just fine with me as I detest all the preparation and clean-up involved with painting.  So, I got busy with the fireplace and found removing the glass panel was a snap – just two screws and tabs to remove and it popped right out.  The problem was the top half of the glass was coated with a thick smoky type residue  I haven’t cleaned it for a couple of years so it was definitely due.

The bottom half of the glass was covered with a thick, grey residueIMG_3237

A little bit of elbow grease and glass cleaner and it was just like new again.  I popped it back into the insert, attached it with the tabs and screws then pressed the remote to light the fireplace.  What a difference, we can actually see the flames again.

The cleaner I used for the glass removed the smoky substance with easeIMG_3240

While I was busy with the fireplace, Paulette had the masking tape, brushes and paint out and was going to town painting the baseboards.  She finished up about a half-hour after me, but just to show how much I appreciated her painting, I made oatmeal for breakfast for the both of us.  I didn’t take any pictures of the oatmeal because I don’t think Mike could take any more food pictures this week!

Paulette did a nice, neat job of painting the baseboardsIMG_3234

The last job was the worst – cleaning out the paint closet.  Why we kept so many cans of old paint with little or nothing in them, I don’t know.  I must have about two dozen nearly empty paint cans to take to the garbage dump, or recycling, or wherever they go now.  I wanted to take a picture for this blog, but Paulette said “no way”!  So, you’ll just have to use your imagination or think about your own paint closet to know what ours was like!!

By the time we finished up, it was just after 2:00 and time to quit for the day.  I still had a bunch of big orange garbage bags full of junk, plus a load of paint cans to take away, but decided that could wait for another day.  I got my Sony eBook and settled onto the couch, with a nice warm fire, and read a book for the rest of the afternoon.  Paulette went up to her sewing room to work on a new quilt project she has started for Christmas.

Rylie has made a full, 100% recovery from her operation last weekIMG_3190

Our little pup Rylie has made a full, 100% recovery from her ‘spaying’ operation last Monday.  She is right back to racing around the house, jumping and roaring up the stairs dragging something she shouldn’t have.  Way too much energy, especially since the Vet says we have to wait one more week before we can turn her loose in the dog park to run with all her friends.

Luckily, we found some frozen spaghetti sauce in the freezer last night, so dinner easy.  After that, it was just a quiet night of TV, computer time and then it was bedtime.

Have a great Tuesday, and thanks again for visiting!
