“But, When It Pours, Man It Pours”

Remember that old song “it never rains in California, but brother don’t they warn you, when it pours, man it pours”!  We found that out first hand yesterday when we left our RV Park for what we thought would be a short 1 hour drive to Temecula, look around a bit, and take the same 1 hour route back to Desert Hot Springs.

A lot of the roads in Hemet in were flooded when we drove thruP1050583

What was to be a nice, leisurely drive turned out to be not so relaxing and, in fact, quite nerve wracking at times due to some of the heaviest rains we’ve seen in a long, long time. It was quite the show.

When it rains around here, it really rains – Temecula againIMG_4644

Along the way, for the first time, we saw “dry washes” full of water;  desert, normally dry as a bone, turned into rivers, streams and lakes;  city streets turned into rivers with water up to mid-hubcap levels.  All in all, it was pretty exciting and livened up an otherwise dull, rainy day.

The day didn’t start out that way as the sun was shining when I first got up and looked out the bedroom window Tuesday morning.  It didn’t last long however, as by 10am, clouds had moved in and it was mostly overcast.  It didn’t look like it was going to be a good “pool day”, so we quickly made plans to go for a drive and check out the city of Temecula about an hour away heading over San Jacinto towards Los Angeles.  We visited the Old Town part of Temecula last year and really enjoyed it and wanted to walk around a see a bit more.

We left our park around 11:30 and headed west on I-10 towards Beaumont where we turned south on Hwy. 79 towards the town of Hemet.  As we approached Hemet, the skies opened up and it started to rain quite heavily.  No problem, we just pushed on to Temecula arriving there just before 1pm – driving was quite a bit slower because of the heavy rain.

If that’s a rain barrel  - it’s full to overflowing!

Temecula happens to be the home of Paulette’s favorite quilt store in the whole world – The Quilter’s Coop!  It’s located right on the main street of Old Town, so my plan was to drop her off at the store and then walk around the Old Town area with Molly and Rylie.  The heavy rain killed that idea quick.  I did drop Paulette off at the quilt store, but all I could do was slowly drive around the streets and stop at the curb to try and snap a few pics thru the rain!

Next time we’re in Temecula, we’re going here for lunch!IMG_4633

After about 45 minutes of that, I picked Paulette up and we decided it was just too wet to do anything else, so we just headed for home, leaving Temecula just after 2pm.  Little did we know, the heaviest rainfall was yet to come.  It just poured all the way from Temecula to just past Hemet and the going was very, very slow.

We had to move over to the wrong side of the road to get around this floodingP1050507

Luckily, the rain slowed finally and we arrived back at our RV Park just after 4pm, safe and sound, and none the worse for wear.  In fact, just as we turned into the park, the clouds cleared a bit and we actually got some glimpses of the sun and blue skies before nightfall.  The weather forecast is for mixed weather for the next few days and then back to a long stretch of sunshine and warm temps – sure hope they’re right!

Have a great Wednesday, and thanks again for visiting!
