Ol’ Blue Eyes Final Resting Place

Sunday was another absolutely gorgeous day here in the Palm Springs area – sunny and hot again!  What’s really unusual is that there has not even been a breath of wind either.  Those windmills aren’t out in the desert for nothing and I know that one of these mornings, we’ll probably wake up to a windy day.  But, in the meantime, this is just great.

In our previous visits to Palm Springs, we’ve driven along Frank Sinatra Blvd., visited Frank Sinatra Park and passed by his old house compound in Rancho Mirage, but we’d never visited the cemetery where he was laid to rest.  So, Sunday morning, with nothing else on our agenda, we headed to the Desert Memorial Cemetery in Cathedral City to check it out.

Frank Sinatra’s gravesite is exactly like every other one – a simple markerIMG_4460

When we got there, and found Frank Sinatra’s gravesite, we were both surprised to see how simple and modest it was – just a marble marker laying flat in the lawn.  His grave was no different than any other in the cemetery.  He is buried alongside his Father(Anthony), Mother(Dolly) and his Uncle(Vincent).  Frank Sinatra passed away of a heart attack on May 14, 1998.  The epitaph just read “The Best Is Yet To Come”.

The flowers cast a shadow on the marker making it difficult to get a good shotIMG_4459

Other celebrities who are buried at Desert Memorial Cemetery include actor William Powell, actress Betty Hutton, actor Cameron Mitchell and former Mayor of Palm Springs, Sonny Bono.  We didn’t bother looking for any of the others as the only one of interest to us was Frank Sinatra.

We only stayed at the cemetery for a few minutes and on the way back we stopped at a nice little park to give the dogs a walk as they were not allowed out of our truck at the cemetery.  The park had a few grapefruit trees that were just loaded. Although we have all kinds of fruit trees at home on Vancouver Island, it’s still neat to see fruit trees we don’t have – like oranges and grapefruit.

There were lots of ripe grapefruit on the trees in the park we stopped atIMG_4462

Instead of taking the I-10 back home, we drove right into downtown Palm Springs.  Downtown is pretty much  a 6 block stretch of Palm Canyon Drive which is home to dozens of restaurants, coffee places, cafes, bars and specialty stores.  It’s a great place to go for a walk and it’s always interesting too.

By noon, we were ready to head back to the RV Park and call it a day as far as exploring went.  As soon as we got back, I changed and hopped on Paulette’s bike to ride up to the pool for a swim – it was a very nice 74F outside so it was just about perfect.  I spent about 45 minutes between swimming and relaxing in one of the poolside spas.

I guess this is what passes for a river in Palm Springs!IMG_4466

When I got back to our site, it was Paulette’s turn to go for a swim, and coincidentally, it was kick-off time for the Green Bay vs Arizona NFL playoff game.  So, I made some lunch, grabbed a Coke Zero and got comfortable in front of the TV to watch what turned out to be the most exciting game of the playoffs so far with Arizona winning in OT.

Dinner was easy last night as I had BBQ’d a few extra hamburgers on Saturday, so we just nuked them, Paulette made a salad and that was it – nice and simple.  Between the end of the game and dinner, we took Molly and Rylie to the dog park for a run with all their new friends.  There sure are a lot of dogs here and most of them are small too, like ours, so they all have a great time playing together.
