It was raining when we got up Saturday morning, so that immediately put an end to Paulette’s plans to look for some garage sales in Palm Springs. Instead, we thought we’d try the Saturday morning “Pancake Breakfast” up at the clubhouse. We haven’t been to one of these events in the month we’ve been at the Sands.
A pretty good turnout early Saturday morning for the “Pancake Breakfast”We walked up to the clubhouse about 8:30 to find it almost full - it began at 8am. Maybe it was the rain, or maybe it was because this week’s breakfast was absolutely free, as it was sponsored by a local RV dealer, Mike Thompson. They had a couple of Tiffin MH’s on display outside for anyone to walk thru and have a look. Let me see…. a $250,000 MH equals how many pancakes??
Another of the unique little shops in Idyllwild, CAThe breakfast was quite good – ham and all you could eat pancakes plus coffee and some fruit. Toni, the dog-sitter, was serving coffee so it seems she does just a little bit of everything around here. We sat with a woman from Edmonton who is in the Wednesday Quilting Club here at the park. This is their first time here and they’ve already reserved for next year.
Bonnie’s Happy Look in Idyllwild, CAIt was still raining when we walked back to our RV after breakfast so we couldn’t take Molly and Rylie to the dog park as usual. Paulette gave her friends Sandy and Robbie a call and they quickly decided to turn the rainy day into a shopping day! So, that left me with the muttzo’s, my computer and my Sony eBook – perfect on a rainy day!!
I just began reading a new book and its not a fiction novel this time. Instead, it’s Doris Kearns Goodwin’s excellent “Team of Rivals – The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln”.
Goodwin makes the case for Lincoln's political genius by examining his relationships with three men he selected for his cabinet, all of whom were opponents for the Republican nomination in 1860: William H. Seward, Salmon P. Chase, and Edward Bates.
Ten years in the making, this book reveals why "Lincoln's road to success was longer, more tortuous, and far less likely" than the other men, and why, when opportunity beckoned, Lincoln was "the best prepared to answer the call." Team of Rivals doesn't just tell the story of Abraham Lincoln. It is a multiple biography of the entire team of personal and political competitors that he put together to lead the country through its greatest crisis.
Another winding down the mountain from 6,000 ft. picWhat has struck me so far about the book, apart from the personal letters, notes and diaries of these famous politicians, is how hard life was back in the first half of the 19th century. Life was difficult, and most often you died young – a man’s average life span was only 45 years. Thousands of women died during childbirth in these times and children died young, as well, through multiple illnesses like cholera, pneumonia and infections.
This plant looks a lot like some in our backyard – only ten times biggerAfter a few hours reading this book, right on 2pm, the sun finally made its first appearance of the day! The dogs had been pretty much cooped up inside so I thought I’d better take them to the dog park. While we were there, Paulette drove up in the truck as the shopping excursion was all finished up. We let Molly and Rylie have a good run and then headed back to our 5’er as the rain looked like it was going to be starting up again. That was pretty much it for Saturday!
Have a Super Bowl Sunday, and thanks again for visiting!
