After wandering around in the Anza-Borrego Desert for about 40 minutes yesterday afternoon, seeing if maybe we could find The Bayfield Bunch, I spotted a very familiar sight – the red Maple Leaf Flag of Canada emblazoned on the back of a lonely looking MH. It had to be “The Bayfield Bunch”! I parked the truck about a hundred yards away and told Paulette I’d check it out just to make sure.
Here’s Al explaining the finer points of boon docking to me!As I got a bit closer, 'thebayfieldbunch.com’ logo painted on the back of the rig removed all doubts – it was definitely Al and Kelly’s desert hide-away! I waved at Paulette to come over with Molly and Rylie, then I knocked on the door. Both Kelly and Al graciously welcomed us even though our arrival at their door was completely unexpected. I think we both felt like we were old friends even though we’d never met before.
Al and me finally seeing “eye to eye” on all things RV’ingIt was pretty much a miracle that we found their boondocking spot in the desert outside of Borrego Springs, CA because we had absolutely no idea where they were located. All I knew from Al’s blog was that he had mentioned “Peg Leg Rd.”. Driving east out of the town of Borrego Springs, we spotted Peg Leg Rd. and a bunch of RV’s boondocking all over the place out in the desert.
We knew this couldn’t be the Bayfield Bunch – RV’s are too closeWe drove about 2 miles up the road but couldn’t see anything that looked remotely like it might be Al. We were looking for an RV with at least a 1/4 mile clearance on all sides. The Peg Leg Rd. boondockers looked to be a whole lot closer together than that.
We wondered if Al and Kelly were camped out in this wind storm – they weren’t!I drove back and turned onto Hwy. S22 heading east towards the Salton Sea when I saw another road heading north into the desert. We thought, what the heck, let’s give it one more try and we turned onto the paved road and headed north. After about a mile, the pavement ended and the road turned to gravel – I had a feeling we might be getting closer, and sure enough, we saw the red Maple Leaf!
Aha! No other rig in sight – could this be them?Al had just finished laying down his lawn chairs as the wind was blowing a bit, but he wasted no time in setting up four chairs so we could all sit down. We had our 2 dogs plus Al and Kelly’s 3, so it was great fun to see them all interacting.
We found them! The Bayfield Bunch Logo was the giveaway!
It was a great visit, even though it was far too short as we didn’t get there until close to 3pm and we knew we still had a 90 minute drive back to Desert Hot Springs. It was great fun though, we had some good laughs, especially about our blogs, and really enjoyed Al and Kelly’s company. So, thanks to the Bayfield Bunch for your great welcome and hospitality! We won’t even give away your super-secret location.
With places like this to explore, it’s no wonder Al and Kelly love it hereWe left the Annzo-Borrego desert boondocking area just after 3pm and headed east on S22 all the way to Highway 86 and then headed north to I-10 which took us right back to Desert Hot Springs. We had to stop and pick up some more dog food, so we didn’t get home until 5:30pm.
Everywhere one looks in Anza-Borrego, great vistas await
So, how did we end up going to Borrego Springs yesterday morning? It was the wind! It kicked up late Saturday afternoon and blew pretty hard all night – according to Paulette, as I never heard a thing. I believed her though as it was still gusting pretty good Sunday morning. It didn’t look to be a very good day to be hanging around the RV Park.
Standing on the edge of the Anza-Borrego badlandsNeither of us had taken the drive over the Santa Rosa Mtn. and then down the other side to the town of Julian and from there on to Borrego Springs. It was quite an interesting drive, but I’ll have to leave that for another day, as this post is already a bit long.
We watched the Olympics again last night and especially the USA’s upset of Canada in hockey. Congratulations to the USA, but all is not lost for Canada though. There’s still a long way to go in this tournament, so we’ll see what happens now that we’re down to the lose and you’re out rounds. Should be interesting.
Have a great Monday, and thanks again for visiting!
