Oak Creek Canyon

This morning, Paulette and I decided to tour Oak Creek Canyon which is on a very scenic stretch of highway between Sedona and Flagstaff. It is a very narrow, winding road which rises from 4,000 ft. at Sedona to 7,000 ft. near Flagstaff. It isn't the kind of road you would want to take an RV on so when we leave for the Grand Canyon on Sunday, luckily, we can just take the I-17 freeway up to Williams, AZ instead.Paulette's not much for these scary type roads and when I remarked that she "lacks a spirit of adventure", she told me her idea of a great adventure is finding a "new quilting store". As luck would have it, at the Oak Creek Canyon Summit there were tables of native vendors selling beads, jewellery and other crafts. So, there was some shopping after all.

It was, as promised, a very scenic drive with quite a few viewpoints along the way which offered great views of the canyons and the mountains.

It was a great way to spend the morning especially since it was such a beautiful day here in Sedona - about 25C which was terrific as we had expected it to be much cooler. After reaching Flagstaff, we did a quick tour of the city and then headed back to Sedona this time taking the I-17 so we arrived at our RV site just after noon. This afternoon, Paulette wanted to check out a quilting store, a bead store and a 'designer' type thrift store in town. So, I dropped her off and arranged to pick her up after about 2 hours, then, Molly and me headed out to see the Montezuma Castle National Monument just outside of Sedona.

Interestingly, Montezuma Castle isn't really a castle at all. It is a multi-family “prehistoric high rise apartment complex”. And, Montezuma, the famous Aztec Emperor never lived there. The 'Castle' was built by the Sinaquas, an ancient Indian Tribe, about 700 years ago in the early 1300's. For unknown reasons, the Sinaqua abandoned their 'cliff dwellings' in this area in the 1400s - 100 years before Montezuma was even born.

I'm not sure what Molly thought about this place, but I found it pretty interesting.
